Hailing from North Carolina, Melva has written poetry all her life as a way to chronicle her own experiences, as well as throse of loved ones.  She has published works with the Duke University Cultural Center, and has written articles on women's issues for The Real Orange Newspaper.  In 2003, she published her first book of poetry.
